Exploring Utah’s National Ability Center

This may be one of the most amazing places I’ve ever discovered. (I know I’ve said that before, but the more we explore, the more we find!)

The National Ability Center (NAC) in Utah is a truly remarkable place that is completely changing inclusive recreation and adaptive sports.

We’ve found other really great disability camps, like Aaron’s Acres in Lancaster County, and even the rare options of camps that will include siblings. Joni & Friends offers family retreats around the world, most with a camp-feel, but nothing compares to the NACs ability to invite all people in for all of the adventures.

If you’re looking for a destination that celebrates ability over disability and fosters a community of support, adventure, and growth, the NAC is calling your name! They have next-level facilities offering every amenity of camp for every ability.

What and Where is the NAC

Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Park City, Utah, the National Ability Center is dedicated to empowering individuals of all abilities through sports, recreation, and educational programs. Since its inception, the NAC has been on a mission to make outdoor adventures and sports accessible to everyone, ensuring that physical limitations don’t limit the fun or the opportunities to thrive.

The NAC is more than a camp: it’s an adaptive sports facility helping people of all ages and abilities to get back to adventuring. They offer programs on and off site for things like skiing, kayaking, and biking. If you’re a local, one of these programs may be more suited to your needs than an overnight camp. They also have Discovery Camps – a daytime opportunity for exploring seasonal sports and recreation adapted to your needs.

Camps serve up endless options for adaptive fun including archery, arts and crafts, community field trips, cycling, high ropes challenge courses, indoor climbing, field games, mountain biking, paddle sports, sensory and science projects, and equestrian activities.

Disability Camps: Adventure for All

One of the standout offerings at the NAC is their array of disability camps. There are specific camps by disability, and camps that welcome all abilities. Crusaders camps focus on individuals with cognitive disabilities. Personal care camps are designed to support individuals with developmental disabilities including intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum. Overnight camps for all abilities offer teens and young adults the opportunity to experience independence and socialization with peers while exploring a variety of activities. These camps are not just about physical activity; they also foster personal growth, social connections, and self-confidence. Participants leave with new skills, lasting friendships, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Most of these overnight camps are for older kids, but younger kids can still enjoy all the fun available through family camps.

Family Camps: Bonding Through Adventure

The NAC’s family camps are all about creating shared experiences and strengthening family bonds. These camps are structured to include activities that everyone in the family can enjoy, regardless of ability level. Whether it’s a weekend retreat or a week-long adventure, families can participate in activities like horseback riding, archery, and adaptive sports, all while enjoying the beautiful Utah scenery. It’s a chance for families to reconnect, support one another, and experience the joys of outdoor recreation together.

Sibling Camps: Special Time for Siblings

Understanding that siblings of individuals with disabilities often need their own space and support, the NAC offers dedicated sibling camps. With programs for ages 6-18, these camps provide a unique opportunity for siblings to connect with others who share similar experiences, have fun, and gain a deeper understanding of adaptive sports and activities. It’s a nurturing environment where siblings can feel seen, heard, and supported, all while enjoying the thrill of adventure and making new friends who understand their unique family dynamic.

Beyond Camps: Year-Round Programs and Events

While the camps are a major highlight, the NAC’s offerings extend well beyond just the summer and winter camp seasons. They host year-round programs and events that cater to a wide range of interests and abilities. Whether it’s competitive adaptive sports, therapeutic riding programs, or educational workshops, there’s always something happening at the NAC. They even offer specialized programs for veterans and military families, recognizing the unique needs and strengths of those who have served.

Let’s Go!

My time at the NAC was just for a walk-through tour, but I was completely blown away by all they offer. The National Ability Center is more than just a place; it’s a community dedicated to inclusivity, adventure, and empowerment. I’ve never seen anything like it – bringing a world of endless adventure to all people.

I’d like to go back with my family and experience adventure in a new way. Who’s with me? This seems like the perfect opportunity for a small group trip – where each family can experience adventure adapted to their needs. Of course, you can also look at sending your kids or going as a family for any of the camps listed above, but if you’d be interested in connecting with us through a shared adventure, please shoot me a message! I’m looking at next winter, but I’m really open to any time of year!

Pin for later!
