You know how challenging things can be traveling with a child with a disability. Travel could get overwhelming, from finding the right accommodation to planning the best activities. In my experience, for instance, I have to be more mindful about where to go, making sure they have ramps and other features that ensure accessibility.

However, with research and preparation, you can have a memorable time with your family. Let me share some handy technologies that can make your lives easier and travel more fun for you and your child.

1.  Travel Planning Apps

Planning a trip with my child used to be overwhelming until I discovered travel planning apps. Wheelmap, for instance, maps wheelchair-accessible places. Meanwhile, AccessNow provides information on locations that are globally accessible. They’re lifesavers, helping us find accessible accommodations and book tickets without stress.

These apps simplify everything, ensuring we have the necessary accessibility features wherever we go. The ease of planning has turned what used to be a daunting task into an exciting part of our trips, making our travels smoother and more enjoyable.

2.  Navigation and Mapping Tools

Using advanced navigation apps has been a game-changer for our family trips. Google Maps shows wheelchair-friendly routes (Select walking route, then click the three dots in the upper right hand corner and select “options”). Apple Maps also has accessibility features. They help us navigate unfamiliar places with confidence. Knowing exactly where we can find accessible routes and locations makes a huge difference.

To augment the benefits of these tools, we make sure our vehicle is well-maintained during road trips. For example, windshield wipers help keep the glass clear, making sure optimal visibility.

3.  Communication Tools

Effective communication tools transform travel experiences for families with kids who have disabilities, such as speech impairments. Proloquo2Go is a prime example. In busy environments like theme parks, children can easily express their preferences, such as choosing the next ride.

Signly, a sign language keyboard, is also incredibly useful. In restaurants, for instance, children can use the app to communicate directly with servers, making ordering food stress-free. These tools bridge the communication gap, easing interactions and reducing frustration, which greatly enhances the overall travel experience.

4.  Mobility Aids

Advanced mobility devices have revolutionized travel for kids who need extra support. Lightweight wheelchairs, such as WHILL Model Ci improve comfort and mobility. It helps users become more active and confident despite the challenges that confront them because of their disability. I also like how compact the wheelchair is, so it can fit in small spaces and is portable.

Adaptive strollers offer several benefits. Special Tomato EIO Push Chair can handle various terrains. With this, the user can get through various terrains comfortably. These technologies can make travel more inclusive.

5.  Sensory-Friendly Gear

One of the best examples is a noise-canceling headphone, which is handy in noisy or crowded environments. Kids will appreciate them, in places like airports and bust tourist spots. They help reduce sensory overload to help children stay calm despite the surrounding chaos.

Similarly, weighted blankets provide a sense of security and comfort, especially during long car rides or flights. They help children feel grounded and relaxed for a positive experience during travels.

6.  Medical Alert Devices

Having an extra layer of safety during travel brings peace of mind for everyone. Medical ID bracelets, for example, keep critical health information easily accessible during emergencies. This small step can be a lifesaver in unfamiliar places where quick medical attention is necessary.

Smartwatches with medical alert features offer additional benefits. They can monitor vital signs and send alerts if any concerning changes are detected. These devices ensure the safety of children with disabilities. At the same time, they allow parents to relax and enjoy the trip, knowing that help is just a signal away.

7.  Travel-Friendly Medical Equipment

Portable medical equipment makes a huge difference for on-the-go families. Compact oxygen concentrators are easy to carry and provide essential support without the bulk of traditional equipment. This allows for greater mobility and freedom, ensuring that children receive the care they need no matter where they are.

Travel CPAP machines are also handy. Designed to be lightweight and easy to pack, they help children with sleep apnea maintain their routine even when out of home. With these portable devices, there will be no disruptions in medical care wherever you go.

8.  Accessible Transportation Services

Getting from one point to another can be difficult when you have children with a disability. Some buses or trains lack ramps or other accessibility features. When available, we always opt for Uber WAV, which allows in-app booking of wheel-chair accessible vehicles.

Whenever we rent a car, we also always pick those with car models equipped with built-in accessibility features. They can sometimes be a little more expensive, but the cost is worth it. We can explore new destinations at our pace, without mobility issues being a hindrance.

9.  Entertainment and Educational Apps

Every parent will agree when I say children easily get bored and grumpy. It can be a nightmare once they start having tantrums. A good way to manage the situation is by downloading apps to keep them entertained and pre-occupied. Many of these apps are also educational, so you’ll be hitting two birds with one stone.

Learning Ally is a highly recommended app for children who have reading difficulties. It has a vast variety of audiobooks, turning travels into an opportunity to learn and have fun.

10. Safety and Tracking Devices

I make it a point to be always by my child’s side whenever we are traveling. Despite this, I invest in tracking devices, so I know exactly where he is. With GPS trackers, I’m aware of my kid’s real-time location.

Wearable devices are must-haves when we travel. We’ve been using one that comes with a geo-fencing feature. With the latter, I can receive instant alerts once my kid is outside of my pre-defined zone.
