I’ve always wanted to try a travel photographer. As a family who’s always on the go, it just makes sense that our family portraits should be in a destination, not a studio. For any family, a destination photo seems like a great way to hang on to the travel memory!

Seize the App contacted me about trying them out in exchange for a review just before the holidays. We happened to be spending Christmas week in D.C., one of their three current locations, so it worked out perfectly!

Here’s what we loved.

Flexibility

You can let your photographer lead the way to their favorite spot, or, if you have something in mind, have them meet you at yours. I’m not a complete novice. I have ideas, but it wasn’t my city, so I was open to guidance. Our photographer took us to some great photo spots, but he was also open to my suggestions along the way (like when I asked for a picture of our backs looking at a monument). It was great to be able to capture the kinds of moments that we can’t on our own.

My request for a back side photo…

Our photographer was also great with all of the requests coming from our kids. He was patient, gave them each individual attention… and photos… and showed them their smiling faces on his camera screen when they asked.

The photo pass can also be used over a full weekend. We chose to do all of ours at once because we had a pretty loose itinerary, but you can have a photographer meet you at a variety of spots at different times.

Easy to Use

The ease of the whole experience was mind blowing. Via the app, or web app, you can book a shoot with a few clicks, communicate with your photographer, and view and download your photos. The photos are available next day (no more waiting!) and you have full access to use them as you wish. The total amount of time I put into using the app was less than five minutes. That includes downloading the app, setting up our appointment, connecting with our photographer on the day of, flashing my QR code from the app to prove our booking, downloading all of my photos when it was done, and leaving a tip. This is the photography of 2023!

Number of Portraits

I’m used to being shown a bunch of pictures, and then prioritizing our choices based on what we can afford. Seize gave us full digital access to all 32 of our photographer’s favorites. I’m all set for my IG posts on the city, along with Christmas cards and photo gifts for next year.

Accessibility

Our photographer was comfortable with the wheelchair accessible paths through the city and into the monuments. He knew our needs and had locations chosen that were easy to get to and to navigate. This is another perk of having a local photographer – he/she doubles as a guide!

The app also highlights photo spots throughout the city. This can be useful for planning your photography route, and give you inspiration for your trip!

Seize the app is currently available in D.C., NYC, and Austin.
