We road tripped north specifically to stay in the Havarti Haus, a wheelchair accessible luxury cabin in New Hampshire’s White Mountains designed by a caregiver who understands the needs of families with both mobility and medical needs. Havarti Haus: Wheelchair Accessible Cabin in the White Mountains
This luxury wheelchair accessible vacation rental in New Hampshire was our main plan. The house is well stocked with games, there’s an accessible firepit for campfire s’mores, there’s a hot tub on the back deck (entered via stairs), there’s a large TV for movie night, and the kitchen is well equipped for dinners in. We had everything we needed to just hang out and enjoy the cabin.
Think wide paved parking, zero entry, wide open spaces, accessible restroom, and a queen bed that can be lowered for easy transfers, or raised for caregiver convenience while assisting with care.
The most accessible room is the queen bedroom beside the main bathroom downstairs. There’s plenty of space for navigating independently, or with a caregiver. The master suite downstairs could also work for a wheelchair, and the shower chair could be used in either bathroom – though the handle bars by the toilet and the roll under sink in the main bathroom make it the easiest to use.
There’s a loft with two twin beds, each with a trundle, and a second upstairs bedroom and bathroom. This could be a great place to visit with another family, enjoying each other’s company after the kids are in bed. We had my niece with us, which was extra fun for the kids, but somehow I was still the only adult.

Adaptive Sports and Accessible Recreation in the White Mountains
When’s the last time you were able to go on a family bike ride on vacation? If your family is like ours, the answer is likely, “never.” Waterville Valley Adaptive may be able to change that. You can set up a private ride, or join in a group ride. It worked out perfectly with our schedule to slide into a ride they already had scheduled, which also provided a neat opportunity to connect with other like-minded families. Waterville Valley Adaptive offers some of the best adaptive sports in New Hampshire, with equipment that allows nearly everyone to participate regardless of mobility level.
They have a wide range of bicycle options, so everyone is able to participate. Our son’s handcycle even had e-assist, making it the most wild ride he’s ever had. It was a beautiful bike ride surrounded by mountain views.
They also offer ski and snowboard in the winter!

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center
Squam Lakes Natural Science Center somehow beautifully combines the educational exhibits that come to mind with a science center with the natural world. If you’re looking for wheelchair accessible attractions in New Hampshire, this was one of our favorite discoveries.
An outdoor path takes you through interactive exhibits and past several rescued animals in their new, protective habitats. The main path is mostly paved, but there are several exhibits that sit on packed gravel. There was one hill, just past the playground, where my son needed a little assistance to maneuver his manual chair. A power chair would not have had a problem.
The exhibits included everything from trivia to building real-life dams, and kept all four kids thoroughly engaged. There’s a beautiful children’s center filled with climbing structures, slides, a dark room, and roll up puzzles and games. While we couldn’t use the climbing structures, my son was still able to access both floors of the building via the outside ramp to the second floor. We spent three hours here, but we could’ve done more if we hadn’t been so ready for lunch!

Accessible New Hampshire Dining at Covered Bridge Farm Table
For a small mountain town, there’s an alarming number of quality cafes, breweries, and restaurants. The Havarti Haus guide includes a list of accessible local favorites. We mostly ate in, but we enjoyed a meal on the deck overlooking the river at Covered Bridge Farm Table. There were accessible seating options both inside and out, the restaurant was easy to navigate, and there were accessible restrooms. The ramp to the back deck may be steep for some wheelchair users, but our ten year old was able to navigate it independently. They had a diverse menu with something for everyone – even Kraft Mac and cheese. The kids’ menu included dessert, so everyone was happy.
Next Time in New Hampshire
We stuck with a low-key camping vibe, but there was a lot more to explore in the area. Next time, we’d love to check out the vintage arcade or catch a movie at the Flying Monkey! It’s close enough to everything you need, and far enough that every corner is beautiful.
As a caregiver, I think it’s the easiest home I’ve ever stayed in. My son was fully independent in the bedroom and bathroom and throughout the house. He needed a little help using the back door entrance to the deck, but that just helped me to know when he was going in and out. After our trip, I read in the guide that we could have asked for a portable threshold ramp. Make a note to do that before your trip!
Overall, the house offers less stress and more connection. My only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer.
