A Comprehensive Guide

Accessible adventure is out there!

First, let me say that Disney California Adventure Park is the most wheelchair-friendly Disney experience we’ve ever had. Disney has always been progressive in inclusion, but with California Adventure Park’s newer build, ADA was a a central part of the design DNA.

We’ve had good experiences at all three parks in Disney World, and in Disneyland Paris and Disneyland California, but none of those parks have the barrier-free build for a smooth day like California Adventure Park.

Accessibility is a top priority at California Adventure Park, with a myriad of features in place to ensure everyone can relish the experience to the fullest. From accessible entrances to rides to exemplary guest services, they’ve got it all sorted.

DAS

Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS) is an invaluable service tailored to accommodate guests who require assistance due to a disability, with accommodations based on individual needs. Because California Adventure Park was built with inclusion in mind, you’re able to fit your wheelchair in all of the ride queues. If you’re used to skipping the line, this may seem like bad news, but this is true inclusion and the authentic theme park experience.

Registering

The force is for all abilities, too

While you can register with guest services upon arrival at the park, you can also now pre-register via live video chat with a cast member. Pre-registration is available as soon as 30 days in advance of a park visit, but no less than 2 days before arrival. I cannot recommend this option enough because:

  1. You won’t lose any precious park time waiting in line.
  2. Your Cast Member will help you book up to 2 one-hour return windows for select experiences—subject to availability. I loved starting the day knowing we already had our first two rides in place.
  3. The interview takes place in the comfort of your home, avoiding overstimulation and helping you to best meet each need.

Things to keep in mind for your DAS interview

  1. You need to have a Disney account and be logged in before you can begin.
  2. The Guest requesting to use DAS must be present during the video call.
  3. Make sure your park tickets are linked to your account before your interview, to make sure your whole party is added to the pass.
  4. The wait time is loooong. It’s likely that you’ll sign up for your interview and find the estimated wait time is over four hours. I signed up when I knew I would be working on my computer, anyway.
  5. The interview is not meant to trip you up or avoid giving you services: it’s meant to determine your needs. Come prepared to discuss what accommodations you know you need. Make sure you’ve considered every aspect of your day.
  6. Now is not the time for modesty. My son is seven, and is developing a strong sense of privacy, but bathroom needs are essential to trip planning. Be open and honest about how toileting needs impact your day.

Is this the best kept secret of the park? No lines, and no transfers.

Depending on what you’re approved for, DAS guests can secure a return time for attractions, allowing them to explore other areas of the park while minimizing wait times. Once you’re ready, you can begin the process here.

Rides

Ok, now the fun part – the rides! California Adventure Park boasts a plethora of attractions that are wheelchair accessible, eliminating the need for cumbersome transfers.

I don’t know why I always panic when someone asks me if my son is able to transfer. I’m always afraid that if I say “no” he won’t be allowed to ride, and if I say “yes” he’ll be required to get out of his chair and risk falling on the way to board. Just because you can transfer, doesn’t mean you have to. You can always say, “he prefers to stay in his chair,” or something along those lines.

The following are rides that don’t require a transfer.

1. The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure: Immerse yourself in an enchanting journey under the sea aboard a clamshell. With seamless wheelchair access, riders can effortlessly roll into their clamshell and partake in the magical voyage alongside Ariel and her aquatic pals.

2. Toy Story Midway Mania!: Step right up and put your skills to the test in this exhilarating 4D shooting game extravaganza! Wheelchair users can effortlessly board the ride vehicle, ensuring everyone can partake in the fun-filled carnival games alongside beloved Toy Story characters.

3. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!: Embark on a whimsical escapade through Monstropolis as you aid Mike and Sulley in rescuing Boo. Featuring accessible ride vehicles, wheelchair users can seamlessly roll aboard and join in the monstrous antics.

4. Web Slingers: This Spider-Man themed ride is similar to the animated game set-up of Midway Mania, only this time you’re slinging virtual webs from your own hands.

5. Pixar Pal-A-Round: This is the iconic ferris wheel. It doesn’t matter if you choose a swinging pod or a regular pod – you can board with your chair for either!

6. Jessie’s Critter Carousel: Ride along with Toy Story’s cowgirl, Jessie, and all her critter friends. They do have the standard accessible carriages, but you can also just park your chair on the carousel and ride in your won seat.

7. Red Car Trolley: Roll on board for a short, entertaining tour… or for a rest while they transport you to one of four stops.

Park Accessibility

This attention to inclusion is consistent throughout the park. We never encountered a single barrier in any shop, restaurant, show, or attraction.

Even without barriers, planning a Disney trip can feel overwhelming. We booked through an agent who specializes in disability travel and made sure we didn’t miss anything. I’m happy to share her contact if you’re looking for direction! Her services are free of charge.

What are you waiting for? Adventurers, assemble!
